Teaching & Learning Coaches2017-07-28T16:21:18-05:00

Teaching & Learning Coaches (also known as TLCs) come in direct contact with the young women and babies at The Sparrow’s Nest. They assist the house staff in nurturing and ministering to these young families. To learn more about TLC Volunteer opportunities please contact our Volunteer Coordinator, Alyssa at alyssa@thesparrowsneststl.org. Before volunteering directly with our residents TLC Volunteers, at the request of our volunteer coordinator, will:

  • Complete the entire volunteer application, which includes at least 3 references and a statement of faith.
  • Complete the background check
  • Sign a confidentiality agreement
  • Attend an interview with a member of The Sparrow’s Nest staff to discuss skills, interests and opportunities and to determine fit for both the volunteer and The Sparrow’s Nest.
  • Volunteer as an Event, Group or Support Volunteer, or all 3, and complete online and in-person training for a total (combined volunteer and training time) of 36 hours over a period of 6 months prior to having direct contact with our residents. Click here to learn more about our TLC volunteer training.

The Sparrow’s Nest has a tremendous base of supporters for which we’re very grateful. If you love telling people they ARE making a difference, these might be great for you:

  • Host a Volunteer Appreciation Event
  • Write thank you notes to our supporters including donors, volunteers and sponsors
  • Visit supporters to express our gratitude
  • Make baked good items to share with supporters or at events

Do you lean more toward the administrative side? Here are some great opportunities for you:

  • Write thank you notes
  • Assist our office manager with daily tasks
  • Assist with data entry
  • Stuff and stamp envelopes for mailings (particularly good opportunity for groups)

If you have a gift for the written word, have a background in marketing or are interested in all things social media, here are some great volunteer opportunities for you:

  • Write and create social media content for Pinterest, Facebook, and Twitter
  • Develop a marketing plan and promotions to advertise events, services, fundraisers, etc.
  • Write articles for the newsletter and blog

We have a schedule for maintenance jobs. This list can be shared with groups or group leaders. The tasks vary greatly and range from replacing light bulbs or furnace filters to painting the exterior of the house or helping to expand our parking areas.

Tasks especially good for groups include:

  • Assist in landscaping or maintenance projects throughout the year
  • Participate in Spring Deep Cleaning
  • Participate in our Monthly Serve Day

Developmentally disabled adults were among the first groups to generously volunteer their time at The Sparrow’s Nest. Here are some ways groups or individuals can be involved:

In case you didn’t know, we love kids of all ages! We especially love giving them opportunities to serve. Here are some ways kids and teens can volunteer at The Sparrow’s Nest:

* Write letters of support to local businesses and legislature

* Make thank you cards

* Hold your own fundraiser such as a car wash, lemonade stand, penny drive, etc.

* Write or draw guest blogs

* Watch younger children at Sparrow Staff meetings
